Recap: Whole Earth Festival at UC Davis

So everyone talks about Picnic Day at Davis, but I think this event was overall so much more fun for me. My campus turned into a hippie land for 3 days. It was a self efficient entity where there was no waste in terms of food and plastic. All food and beverages were served on plates or cups which were later returned to be washed. There were hand made items, hemp made clothing, earth-y themed trinkets and more. There were performances and music. People came from different cultures and ideals. There were families with kids, to college kids from UC Davis, to hippies that lived in Davis or elsewhere. This event by far made me love my campus.

I forgot the flavors of our popsicles.. but they were really unique. I think one of them were mango and sweet rice.

Recap: 3/3/13

It was very windy in San Francisco. Cathy and I decided to go to San Francisco for the free museum day at the Academy of Sciences. We both have never gone so we had no idea where to park so that our entire experience would be free.

Oh well, what more could you ask for.

I discovered the fill blacks and fill lights (I have ignored them this entire time.)

Recap: SF Pride 2012 (Day 2)

Click here for Day 1 Recap

I actually edited these pics weeks ago but I never got around to posting these up. I think it’s funny how I’m at home on a Saturday night uploading pictures of my friends and I getting twisted in the middle of the day. Only in San Francisco, and only at SF Pride on the nice ass grass of Dolores Park. T’was one of the hallmarks of my summer.

Recap: San Francisco Pride 2012 (Day 1)

My SoCal buds drove up to celebrate SF Pride. They rented a room and me, Cathy, and Michael pitched in to stay with them. There weren’t any events going on that Friday night so we just threw our own. Drinks and board games tend to be a good mix anyways. Before we even started drinking, we were watching the Giants game andddddd they won.

These bitches…

Recap: Santa Cruz (Part 2: Anniversary)

After Cathy and I dropped off Lynn at Camp Campbell, we drove to Seabright Beach and then to Boardwalk. We had lunch and walked around a bit then headed downtown. We had no plans on going to the beach that day, but hey, spontaneity at its best.

The kids were playing soccer in the sand while wearing these shoes that looked like socks with a bottom sole. Weirrrrddd

While we walked downtown, we noticed a lot of stores carried rainbow clothing and objects. We then noticed a lot of gay couples walking around. Not far into downtown was a gay bar and the following weekend was Santa Cruz Pride. Hah, who knew.

Recap: Santa Cruz ( Part 1: YMCA Camp Campbell)

Cathy had to drive her little sister, Lynn, to science camp so I tagged along. We got lost along the way but find our way there. When we arrived in the woodsy areas there were only 2 lane roads. We encountered narrow and hilly roads along with a crazy driver who wanted to run us over. Yeah… good times.

So when you think of “Science Camp” you think of cabins like these right?

This was Cathy’s cabin when she went in elementary school. Cabin #9

The room was small and had a bunch of bunk beds.

Then we walked further into the camp and saw these massive, futuristic looking structures.

We later found out that kids camp like this now:

Well shit.

Lynn’s name was Lightning for that week since she was going to be the cabin leader.

Recap: SubZero Art Festival 2012

I missed the SubZero Art Festival last year and I swore to myself I wouldn’t miss it the following year. There are Art Walks on every first Friday at Downtown San Jose, but this had more activities, stalls, food trucks, and people.

There was a concert going on in that bus.

Models held their pose for several minutes while people sketched them.

There were the typical exhibits and museums we normally visit.

MACLA - Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana

Metro Photo Exhibit

Generally, I wasn’t so found of their gallery but this entire set was really interesting. You had to do some double takes and ask, ” What the hell is that?” The photographer noted that all the pics were taken on the streets of San Jose.

Then there was a bus parked on the middle of street that was a an art gallery.

The movements you perform between the gaps are projected on the screen and you also hear a sound. It was like an electric harp.

Of course Michael went ape shit when there wasn’t a line to try it out.

Recap: Future Roots Festival + Fanime 2012 (Day 2+3) + Breakfast

Michael, Cathy and I went to watch the performers at the Future Roots Festival hosted/promoted by Asian American Community Involment (AACI) and South Bay First Thursday (SBFT). We bumped into Carolyn and her sisters there near the main stage along with Jess. It was located at Cesar Chavez Park in downtown. There were also stalls where people sold their t-shirts to promote their brand.

Cathy and Jess

Then we went to Fanime since it was just a block away from where we were.

The next day, I went to Fanime again but with Michael, Lauren, Alaena, and Cathy but at night.

Hoodrat shit

We dropped Lauren and Aleana off then picked up Carolyn to go to a party.

On Memorial Day, I woke up to eat breakfast with some of my high school friends.

Recap: Burn Day + Fanime 2012 Day 1

Burn Day

After work, Carolyn, Cathy and I went to burn things from our past. We just happen to choose the windiest day of the week. I swear the tv shows and movies make starting a fire seem so easy. We had a problem starting the fire last time when we burned things. We used the same garbage can that we left behind a tree from last time. It was still there after several months.

Cathy accidentally let all her papers fly away, so before I picked up all the papers.. I took pictures. (duh)

Then these Indian men threaten to call the police if we didn’t stop the fire. It took us awhile to stop the fire and we walked away disappointed since we didn’t finish burning all of our things.

Fanime 2012 Day 1

The next day I went to Fanime in downtown San Jose with Pam. Pam and I went for our first time last year. It was our goal to go during high school but we never got around to it. It was neat to see characters from mangas and animes walking around the Convention Center. People would plan ahead of time with others to complete a whole character set of a series through forums.

Pam told me to take a picture of her because she had a nice butt.

The girl with the loudspeakers organized the group of My Little Pony.

Yes, My Little Pony.

There are multiple “families” so people were allowed to take pictures of a specific family then all of them as a whole.

.

Most of the time we didn’t know a lot of the characters passing by us but there were some awesome cosplay costumes. We didn’t know who this guy was but we admired him.

Edit: He’s Sephiroth from Final Fantasy

Later that night, I met up with Pam, Kathy, and Tee to eat at Wingstop. Afterwards they came over to my place to make summer plans.

Recap 3/26/12: Ikea

Cathy was the only one that week that didn’t have spring break. She ditched class since she already took the midterm the week before and went on an Ikea adventure with Michael, Carolyn, Joe, and I. We ate lunch and explored Ikea. Then we ate again….

Ikea’s awesome meatballs with cranberry sauce and gravy

Princess Cake

Joe dragged Carolyn from one end of the room to the other side with the rolling chair… let’s just say the Ikea worker mugged at us for awhile..

We left them here and they managed to take an hour nap.

.

We watched Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets in one of the rooms in the meantime..

50 cent hot dogs, c’mon… that’s too cheap

Cinnamon Rolls and Hazlenut Chocolate Bar

Recap 3/25/12: Shopping at Valley Fair/Santana Row

Kathy and Katherine came home for Spring Break and Pam came home just because. Tee was out sick so she didn’t get to go with us. Then there was Daph, she was stuck in SoCal. The girls wanted to go shopping, so after I ran all of my errands I took them to Valley Fair and Santana Row. We managed not to buy anything but ice cream from McDonalds. Other than that, we just camera whored all afternoon like a bunch of boppers and caught up. What’s new.

Recap 3/16/12: Bowling Night

I’m spending my Friday night posting about last friday night. Ha, how interesting. Lauren had the night off for once from work so she wanted to go out. The weather has been really inconsistent for the past couple weeks. Earlier that day, it was cloudy but later on to the night it started pouring. We didn’t want to go clubbing so we went bowling instead.

We bowled buzzed, ha and let’s just keep it as that. Oh, and I won.

Side note: some of these shots were shot by Cathy (not bad..)

Gutter…

We were constantly rolling around the floor.. well, more like Lauren was on the floor a lot

Recap: 3/10/12 Black and Brown Fashion Show 2012

We waited for about an hour and half for the show to start. The doors opened at 9 and we got in by 9:30 ish. We were probably the youngest ones in the entire room. Everyone got a free drink because they were old enough. I saw so many girls with their hair dyed or they shaved half of their head. Some girls look like they were straight out of loobook. (Yes, I guess people on the internet do exist in real life)

I ran into my friend Ashley there. I shot her during the fall. Her boyfriend was one of the models for the show.

A Switzerland blogger came up to Cathy and I for a picture. After that, Cathy and I were just talking and the girl tried to take a picture of us again but with her iPhone. I mean.. I know we’re good looking.. (hahaha jk)

Recap: Vietnam Trip (Day Two)

Breakfast in Vietnam, just like in any other oversea country, always has a westernized influence: waffles, pancakes, eggs, and of course.. bacon. Even though they are the same dishes the bacon is slightly different. Normally, hotel breakfasts get repetitive but they had Vietnamese dishes. I don’t think I’ll ever eat porridge for breakfast as much as I ever will in my life unless it’s in Vietnam. I really can’t complain though.

Clockwise: Watermelon, Dragonfruit, and Vietnamese Passion Fruit

After breakfast, we headed to the Temple of Literature. Students would visit the temple to get good luck before the exams.

Some people take their wedding pictures there too.

Pumpkin soup

Bicycle Taxi

Then we visited the museum/temple next to the Sword Lake. In my recap post of day one, I mention about the legend of a huge turtle who swallowed the emperor’s sword. There is a huge turtle that still lives in the lake and the one pictured below is a preserved one from the lake.

My uncle Dan and my mother

Then we went to a tourist trap (which was incredibly boring), but my mom said that the performance and the songs sung were genuine Vietnamese folklore.

Finished the day with some of The Office Season 3.
