Vietnamese New Years is all about the red envelopes and the quarters you saved up all year just to gamble.

Tet (iv)

Grand Century (San Jose, CA)

Recap: 2/6/11 - Tet (Vietnamese New Years) pt2

I know, I know. Way, way old right? I swear I was going to upload it earlier. I was going to post this before my SD trip, but then the SD trip came around so yeah. Oh wells, better late than never. Normally when things reach that 3 week time - I would just not post it, but I actually like this set. Besides, Tet is my favorite holiday and why not relive it? Food, money, and fire crackers? It’s just a given.

It was the last day of Tet, so the family went to Grand Century to see some firecrackers since we heard a lot of people have been burning some. It turns out that the cops were practically camping there so no one lit anything. Instead, everyone was gambling.

Even the kids were gambling.

I have no idea what this was, but it looked interesting.

My mums wanted to go to Lion Market to go grocery shopping and then I heard fire crackers from far away. Yup, my favorite past time.

Recap: 2/5/11

Celebrated Tet with my dad’s side. It’s funny how far our family has grown. The “1st generation” of cousins are in highschool/college/ college graduates. The “2nd generation” of cousins are infants and elementary students. Seeing the little cousins running around is like dejavu. Chilled with the cousins for a bit. Although we all live around the same area, I barely know them. I even stayed after my parents left. Weird right? Afterward, chilled with the buds.

Me: Oh my gosh,  you would be smiling. You were supposed to look indie

Pam: I don’t know how to look indie!

Kathy: Look candid. Look like we’re reading the instructions.

Recap: 2/4/11

Tumblr and my internet was being weird yesterday. I was going to upload these earlier, but you know me - I lag.

Anyways it was Tet (Vietnamese New Years) on the 3rd. That midnight before, my neighborhood was echoing the sound of firecrackers snapping and cracking. There is simply no other place like South San Jose when it comes to New Years. There are so many Vietnamese people in our area that none of them even thought they would get caught. Then it continues until the weekend. I asked my mom earlier why we did such a ritual, I mean it’s fun but why right? The idea of it was to replicate the sound of thunder and so ghosts and evil spirits leave the house when they hear it. They flee because they’re afraid and by the time it’s over - they’re lost and cannot return to the house. Those that own businesses or stores also light fire crackers in front to rid off evil spirits and promote a better year for business.

Tee had a job for our buddies and I to work on the following Friday. We were supposed to sell tickets for the new plaza that was built next to Grand Century. We got there early and then our employer said she didn’t need us until later afternoon. We basically chilled, ate, then picked up Kel at SCU, and went back to only find out she still didn’t need us. Oh wells, it was a chill day.
